At MyITpros, we’re predicting robust business growth – especially for small and midsize businesses – in 2015. At the end of last year, nearly all of our clients were investing in infrastructure, software and IT upgrades to support growth. That’s good news, of course. But it can also come with some growing pains for IT. If your business is in growth mode, here are three things to be aware and to plan for so that you can minimize those pains.
1. Growing Need for IT Support Resources
We often find that when businesses grows, they outgrow their IT support resources. For example, maybe your company has been relying on an internal employee to take care of IT issues in addition to regular job duties. There are two problems that can come up with that when business growth takes off: One, the person needs to focus more on their core responsibilities as a result of growth, and two, the person can no longer handle IT alone because of the growing number of systems and users. You could hire a full-time in-house IT person, but that has its risks. Hiring a one-person outside resource is problematic, too; what happens when you need them urgently and they’re tied up with another client? We recommend going with a larger company to address your growing needs.
2. Increased IT and Data Security Requirements
As the Sony hacking incident at the end of last year reminded us, data security is vital today. And that goes not just for big companies like Sony, but for any company – and especially growing companies that find themselves sharing information and technology resources with more and more people both internally and externally. There are a lot of affordable, simple measures companies can take that will protect them from most IT and data threats; nothing can provide 100% protection, but anti-virus software, firewalls and other reasonable measures will keep you as safe as it’s possible to be these days. We recommend talking to an IT services provider that can assess your situation, formulate a plan that’s specific to your security needs and implement the various components of the plan.
3. Growing Concerns About Data Backup
The principle here is pretty simple: The more you grow, the more you have to lose. Every business generates a lot of data these days, in many forms – from emails and contact lists, to Office documents and spreadsheets, to marketing brochures and videos, and on and on. And the bigger your business, the more of that data you’re going to have – whether it’s onsite at your business or in the cloud. The question is what are you doing to protect against losing that data in the event of a catastrophe? That catastrophe could be a natural disaster or it could just be someone hitting the delete button by accident. But whatever the cause, growing businesses need effective data backup to keep from losing critical data. There are a lot of different solutions available to suit different circumstances, and an IT services provider can help you evaluate your choices to determine what’s right for you.
