One of the things MyITpros prides itself on is having a strong culture of teamwork- and that is made possible by our phenomenal staff. Each month, we’re spotlighting one of our awesome team members so you can know the faces behind the brand. This month, we are pleased to sit down with one of our newer employees who came in and immediately made a splash! Dave Linn– a Systems Administrator II star!
How did you get into the IT field?
“I was going to school for engineering, but decided that wasn’t for me. And what can I say, I‘m a nerd and always have been a nerd! So there was opportunity and I was old enough to know that there was a career to be made here working in IT.”
How would you describe a typical day as a Systems Administrator?
“(laughs heartily) I would say total chaos. I never know what I am walking into – I can be on-site one day or have 5 to 7 urgent issues pop up. I have to coordinate a lot of efforts between myself and my team. I am primarily client facing, and determine if issues need to be escalated or if I can have other members of my team come in. It’s a lot of split decision making and I integrate with so many departments- more so (in my opinion) than any other position in the company. I’m a manager and facilitator more than straight ‘tech-savvy’.”
Describe a fulfilling project you’ve worked on.
“That would have to be server and email migration and upgrade for a client. This was the largest project that I’ve worked on. They had a lot of specific line-of-business applications and it was my first Office 365 migration experience. It was interesting to get to move everything over as there were a lot of aspects in the one project making it super challenging- but I learned so much.”
Tell us something that you’ve learned while working at MyITpros.
“There is a lot that I’ve learned! If you want to know tech-specific, then I’ve learned Sharepoint and how to migrate it and Office365 migrations. I’ve also learned lots of avenues for how to handle difficult situations. I feel like I’ve really added a lot to my technical and interpersonal repertoire.”
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
“Hopefully in management! I feel like it is my skill set and my strength to be a facilitator and communicator. I don’t think my biggest strength lies in tech.”
Any advice to people looking to move into the IT field?
“Study up! Don’t be afraid of challenges. Know when you’re out of your depth.”
