The best time to hire an MSP? When you think you don't need one!

This may sound counterintuitive, but the best time to consider partnering with a managed IT services firm is not when you urgently need IT help. However, that is precisely what many companies do. Whether their IT is in-house or provided by a vendor, they wait until the issues are so severe that they cannot get work done – or worse yet, their daily operations have been completely halted. 

The phenomenon that causes people to wait until a problem is really painful is known as the devil-you-know principle. As the old saying goes, “I’d rather dance with the devil I know than with the devil I don’t.” In the context of corporate IT, we choose not to resolve existing issues out of fear that doing so may put us in a worse spot.

In reality, this sort of thinking is composed of two flawed assumptions:

  1. That the risk and cost of making the change are greater than those of not making the change.
  2. That you have no way of accurately selecting a partner you can trust to solve your issues.

Myth-busting assumption No. 1

Rather than burying your head in the sand, why not at least evaluate whether the issues are reasonably soluble or something you’re likely going to have to live with? Otherwise, you’ll have no way of knowing whether you’re headed for a costly disaster until you’re actually experiencing it. And you know what they say: Hindsight is 20/20.  


Myth-busting assumption No. 2

Evaluating various potential IT partners is not exactly ideal when you and your business are under duress. People rarely make their best decisions in such situations, and even if you’re able to quickly evaluate and choose a suitable candidate, getting that new partner to immediately drop what they’re doing and come running to your aid will likely be very costly.

Many of our new clients acknowledge that before manifesting as critical situations, their IT issues had been building for quite a while. If any of these telltale signs sound familiar, you likely need to consider evaluating your IT management:

  • Network or server outages several times a year
  • Multiple users not being able to access IT resources several times a week
  • Server(s) of 5+ years of age
  • No monthly verified/tested backup or disaster recovery reports
  • No offsite backup
  • Either non-existent or freeware antivirus and malicious software protection
  • Networking equipment (routers, switches, firewalls, cabling) exposed in unprotected areas
  • A server rack that looks like a rat’s nest

The moral of the story

Whenever possible, evaluate your IT management before your situation reaches a critical level. That way, you can take the time to choose an IT partner that will be the right fit for your business, can be trusted to solve your problems, and will give productive and practical guidance going forward.
